“Every generation blames the one before and all of their frustrations come beating on your door” The Living Years, Mike + The Mechanics
Written by Phil Almeroth | Director of Capabilities
In one week I will hit what has traditionally been considered a major age milestone. I’ll move into a new age category on all surveys, I’ll be fully qualified for all senior discounts, and will be the same age that my familial predecessors chose to retire (FWIW I’m not).
I had the opportunity to speak on Project Management in an AI World at the GovIT Leadership Conference a couple weeks ago, and in doing that I started to ponder how much has changed in the world since I was born.
I also started to think about the “reverse age” view of change; if I went back the same number of years from my birthday, what had transpired since then? Those years coincide roughly with the birth of one of my grandfathers, so I put together a quick – and not fully inclusive – comparison of Thor’s world (yes, my grandfather was Thor), and my world over the same number of years. And, of course, AI and Google helped…
Thor’s World (1896 – 1959) | Phil’s World (1959 – Present) |
Tech and Communications Change
· Electricity and lighting, the telephone and radio, and the automobile revolutionized daily life. |
· The first computers were enormous and limited in use; PC’s, smartphones, and the internet have revolutionized how we communicate, work, and access information. AI now brings a whole new chapter into tech change. · Post Space Race, traveling, living, and researching life beyond the earth’s atmosphere was only a dream |
Geopolitical Change | |
· Two World Wars, the Russian Revolution, and the Great Depression changed the world from a largely parochial view to a different view on how we are all connected · The advent of the nuclear age and concerns over nuclear warfare and the Cold War led to the division of the world into capitalist and communist spheres · The UN and IMF created a new, global political and monetary landscape · Nationalist movements in Asia and Africa brought the end to colonial empires, with other countries following. |
· The Soviet Union no longer exists, and Russia has replaced it as a regional power, while the U.S. remains a global leader. · The political map of the world has since changed considerably, with decolonization also spawning economic and political instability · The EU represents an unprecedented level of political and economic cooperation among European nations. |
Science and Medicine | |
· The discovery of penicillin in 1928 revolutionized medicine, with vaccines, better sanitation, and antibiotics drastically reducing mortality |
· The discovery of DNA’s structure has led to genetic modification technologies, which are revolutionizing medicine and agriculture. · Climate change is a major global issue, and efforts continue to reduce carbon emissions and protect ecosystems. |
Culture and Entertainment
· The rights of women and minorities saw significant change, through great controversy and personal cost. · A cultural revolution through blues, jazz, cinema, modern art, and mass media changed how people consumed culture. · The rise of the middle class changed societal, housing, and consumer norms. |
· Civil rights, gender equality, and inclusivity have brought about significant changes in laws and attitudes regarding race, gender, and sexual orientation. · TV going from black and white only with one-way broadcast to streaming services, digital TV, social media, and online news platforms that connect the world have changed how people consume music, film, and television. · Social media platforms have redefined how people interact and share culture, with influencers and viral content becoming integral parts of modern entertainment. |
Economic | |
· Rapid industrialization in the West reshaped economies. The U.S. economy grew rapidly, and cities expanded as factories became the center of production. · Following WWII the U.S. and other nations experienced rapid economic growth, thanks to rebuilding efforts, technological advancements, and the Marshall Plan. |
· Globalization has integrated economies, leading to international trade, multinational corporations, and more interconnected markets. · E-commerce, digital currencies like Bitcoin, and global financial markets have fundamentally transformed the global economy. |
Transportation | |
· The Wright brothers’ first flight began the era of aviation. By the 1920s and 1930s, air travel started to become more commercial and widespread. · The combustion engine and the automobile reshaped how people and goods were moved, as well as where they could live and conduct business |
· Air travel is a routine part of life for millions, with low-cost carriers and high-speed travel becoming more accessible. · Personal vehicles are packed with technology like GPS, electric engines, and autonomous driving features, with EVs marking a major shift toward sustainability and combating climate change. |
These and many other examples show radical transformation in both eras. Technological progress, global wars, economic upheavals, and shifting social norms reshaped the world, and set the stage for the groundbreaking transformations of my lifetime. Change has, and will be, the constant, and as always, how we respond will determine if we, our successors, and our world are better for it. I wonder how my 3.5 year old (she is NOT 3…) will view what happened during her life when she gets to this stage…
