The Handoff Problem: When Every Team Delivers, but the Business Still Falls Short
by Neha Trivedi

Imagine missing a connecting flight even though you checked in on time, cleared security, and reached your gate as planned. Every step worked—except the connection between them. The same thing happens in business transformation. Strategy defines the vision, IT delivers the solution, Operations prepares for launch, and Customer Service discovers the gaps. Each team may meet its commitments, yet the business outcome still falls short. The problem isn’t always execution within teams. Sometimes, it’s how the work is designed to flow between them.
This is where many transformation efforts lose momentum. Organizations often measure success by function, workstream, or project milestone, while the customer experiences the entire journey. A decision without an owner, a dependency discovered too late, or a process that breaks at a departmental boundary can trigger rework, delays, and missed business benefits. Better communication helps, but it isn’t enough. A strong Business Transformation Capability makes end-to-end ownership part of how the organization operates: connecting business strategy, processes, technology, and people through visible dependencies, clear decision rights, and shared accountability for outcomes. The goal isn’t simply to help teams work together; it’s to design a system in which their work comes together effectively.
The real test of transformation isn’t whether every team delivered its piece. It’s whether those pieces created the outcome the business actually needed. That requires leaders to look beyond individual workstream status, identify where value gets lost between functions, and measure success across the entire business journey. So, the next time a transformation hits a roadblock, ask more than “Who’s holding things up?” Ask, “Where does the flow of value break down—and what capability do we need to fix it for good?” Because great teams deliver their commitments. Great transformation capabilities make those commitments add up to meaningful business results.
