Trusted to Deliver

Happy Friday! In this week’s edition of The Solve, Katie Waddell (Pierce), Director of Human Resources, discusses how HR can support employees through life’s unexpected challenges by helping them understand their leave options, navigate complex requirements, and feel supported when they need it most.

How HR can help Employees when life happens.

by Katie Waddell (Pierce)

Things come up, and life happens. Whether it’s an unexpected illness or injury, a family member who needs care, or the arrival of a new baby, needing a leave of absence can be stressful enough for employees without having to figure out all the complexities and paperwork involved. Many employees don’t realize that they may have multiple leave options available to them, some of which may overlap.

This is where Human Resources can make a meaningful difference. HR isn’t just there to administer policies or ensure paperwork is completed. HR can also be a resource for employees during life’s challenging moments. The goal is to help employees understand their options, navigate the process, and know what to expect.

Understanding leave options and leave laws can be complicated, especially
when employees may qualify for more than one type
of leave or benefit at the same time.
The options available depend on where an employee lives and works. Employees may have access to
state-provided paid family and medical leave programs, paid sick leave, and other benefits. Fourteen states and counting have paid family and medical
leave programs that can provide wage replacement while an employee is on leave. Other options may include the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), short-term disability, paid time off (PTO), and more.

It’s understandable why employees may find the process confusing. One of the most common sources of confusion is the concept of concurrent leave. For example, an employee may be approved for both FMLA and a state paid leave program for the same period of time, rather than taking one leave period after another.

It’s also important for employees to understand the difference between paid benefits and job-protected leave, as they are not necessarily the same thing. One program may provide income replacement, while another provides job protection. An employee may have multiple rights and benefits that apply to the same period of absence. Without help from HR to explain how these pieces fit together, it can be difficult for employees to understand how their leave options work.

HR can help employees understand the different types of leave that may apply to their situations and determine what steps they need to take. The goal isn’t simply to process paperwork; it’s to help employees understand their options and feel comfortable throughout the process by guiding, educating, and supporting them during some of the most important and challenging times in their lives.

Employees don’t have to navigate the process alone.
