Happy Friday! In this week’s edition of The Solve, Casandra Noyes, Account Executive, reflects on a big moment as the shift into spring gives us a natural chance to reset. She shares simple, practical ways to refresh both your digital and physical workspace so you can feel more focused, organized, and ready for the season ahead.
Spring Into Action: Refresh Your Digital &
Physical Workspace
by Casandra Noyes
As the season changes, do you get the urge to clean the garage, the house, or do yard work, and make everything fresh for summer? Spring cleaning often evokes a powerful sense of accomplishment, renewal, and calm, acting as a “fresh start” that reduces anxiety and boosts mood. Physically removing clutter helps clear your mind, providing a feeling of control, increased energy, and enhanced focus. This satisfying “reset” can release endorphins, often leading to a cleaner, happier, and more relaxed living environment. Well, it’s also the perfect time to clear out our digital and physical clutter to boost productivity and peace of mind at work.
Just as we declutter our homes in the spring, our digital lives and office spaces need a yearly refresh. A messy desk can slow you down, but a cluttered computer can actually impact your productivity, security, and mental clarity.
Here is a comprehensive checklist for a fresh start:
Digital Cleanup: Organize Files & Boost Speed
Declutter the Desktop & Downloads: Your desktop should be a workspace, not a storage unit. Delete unused screenshots, temporary files, and move documents
into designated folders. Have what you use most the easiest to access.
Master Your Inbox: Search for “unsubscribe” to remove mailing lists you no longer read, and archive or delete old emails to work toward “inbox zero”. There is
nothing better than using your mailbox as a to do list and when there
is nothing to do, you’ve caught up, your mailbox is at zero emails!
Uninstall Unused Programs: If you haven’t used an app in a year, you probably don’t need it. Uninstalling unused apps frees up storage and makes your computer run faster.
Back It Up: Before finishing your cleanup, ensure all important files are saved to an external hard drive or cloud storage (e.g., OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox).
Physical Cleanup: Clean Your Devices
Tackle the Keyboard & Screen: Use a can of compressed air to remove crumbs from your keyboard, then wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol. Clean your monitor with a dry, lint-free cloth. You don’t want your keyboard to be a collection of your lunches and snacks for the past year.
Sanitize Peripherals: Disinfect your mouse, phone, and desk phone, as these are often hotbeds for bacteria, especially
after winter.
Physical Office Refresh
Clear the Desk: Remove all items from your desk, wipe the surface down, and only return items you use daily.
Organize Paperwork: Create a “To Read,” “Action,” and “File” system for
paperwork to keep your desk clear.
Tame the Cables: Use cord organizers or twist ties to tidy up the messy cables under your desk.
Maintain Your New Routine
Digital Declutter Fridays: Spend 5-10 minutes at the end of every week organizing your digital files to avoid a massive cleanup later.
By taking these steps, you’ll not only improve your computer’s performance but also create a peaceful environment that helps you focus on what really matters.
Get out and enjoy your Spring!
