The [Solve] Friday, December 19

Trusted to Deliver

Happy Friday and Happy Holidays! In this week’s edition of The Solve, Tom Newman, Owner and Sales & Recruiting Lead, reflects on the power of presence in leadership. Drawing from a deeply personal year marked by loss and reflection, he explores how focusing on the present moment can sharpen perspective, strengthen leadership, and create more meaningful progress. By leading with intention, clarity, and full engagement in the moments that matter most, leaders can build trust, resilience, and lasting impact now and into the year ahead.

The Power of Now: A Year-End Reflection on Loss, Presence, and Leadership

by Tom Newman

As the year comes to a close, many of us naturally pause to reflect—on what we achieved, what challenged us, and what we carry forward into the new year. In business, this is often framed in terms of results and performance. Yet some of the most meaningful lessons of leadership are learned not through metrics, but through experience.

For me, the past year has been a year that you can never plan for in life.  We all experience loss, could be death, relationships, major health issues essentially the way things “use to be” in our lives. In regard to that, by no means did my family corner the market.  In my process I realize it’s similar to a pregnancy or child birth. Many of us go through that journey but it is very
uniquely “ours”.  On recent trip to London, I was walking through a random neighborhood and saw a banner

“Be blessed with the Power of the NOW

It was a moment that hit me because I realized it was what I am trying to daily but never thought of it as a power.  For me it’s been a transformation in mindset and wanted to share the basic concept that can have a big impact on how we can operate in our personal and professional lives.

When Perspective Changes

Grief has a way of quieting the noise. The constant pull of what’s next—next quarter, next initiative, next goal—loses its grip. The future feels less predictable, and the present moment becomes unavoidable.

In that space, priorities clarify.

What matters most are the conversations you’re in, the people you’re leading, and the decisions directly in front of you. Many of the distractions and perceived urgencies that once demanded attention fall away.

It’s a perspective shift that is difficult to manufacture in the normal pace of business—but one that carries powerful lessons.

Presence as a Leadership Practice

Operating from a place of presence changed how I show up as a leader.

I listen more carefully.
I engage more intentionally.
I approach decisions with greater clarity and less noise.

The result has not been less progress, but better progress. Teams respond to leaders who are fully engaged. Trust builds
more quickly. Conversations become more productive. Presence, I’ve learned, is not a soft concept—it is a practical
leadership discipline.

Focusing on the Experience, Not Just the Outcome

As leaders, we are conditioned to measure success by outcomes. And outcomes matter. But the path to those outcomes—the experience of the work itself—is where culture, resilience, and long-term performance are built.

Grief reinforced a simple truth: life is not lived in milestones, but in moments. Business is no different.

When leaders focus on being fully present through challenges, uncertainty, and collaboration, teams operate with greater alignment and purpose. The work becomes more human—and more effective.

Applying the Power of Now

As we close the year and look ahead, the power of now offers a practical lens:

    • Focus on today’s most meaningful work, not just tomorrow’s plans
    • Lead the conversations you’re in with full attention
    • Make decisions rooted in clarity rather than anxiety about future outcomes
    • Create space for reflection, especially during moments of transition

This approach doesn’t diminish ambition. It strengthens it by anchoring effort in what can actually be influenced.

A Thought for the Season Ahead

The holidays invite reflection, gratitude, and presence—values that often get crowded out during the year. Loss and grief, while difficult, deepen our understanding of those values and remind us where impact truly happens.

As we enter a new year, success doesn’t have to mean moving faster or doing more. Sometimes, it means showing up fully—moment by moment—with intention, focus, and care.

Because leadership, progress, and meaning are never built in the future.
They are built now.

May you All be blessed with the Power of Now this Holiday Season and into the New Year.
