Navigating the Return: Rebuilding Teams and Engagement in a Hybrid Work Landscape
By Heather Miner | Sr. Recruiter, Ingenio Program Lead
I keep seeing posts and articles about Employees vs Companies in a struggle for Work from Home or the age of disengaged workers. But the reality is that most people are getting back to working in the office a couple days a week and time would be better spent how to best support that shift and leverage it to boost engagement and build relationships.
The transition back to the office after an extended period of remote work could find many faced with a new set of complexities and challenges. The shift to hybrid schedules adds an additional layer of complexity to the process of rebuilding teams and fostering engagement. While remote work offered flexibility and autonomy, it also posed challenges in terms of team cohesion, collaboration, and employee engagement. Now, as organizations contemplate a return to the office, they must navigate the intricacies of reintegrating remote and in-person teams while maintaining productivity.
One of the key challenges in rebuilding teams in a hybrid work landscape is ensuring equitable access to opportunities and resources for both remote and in-person employees. Those who are still remote may feel disconnected or overlooked compared to their in-person counterparts, leading to feelings of isolation and disengagement. Similarly, in-person employees may perceive remote workers as being less committed or involved in team activities.
To address these challenges and foster a sense of unity and collaboration among team members, organizations can implement the following strategies:
- Create a Hybrid-Friendly Culture: Foster a culture that values flexibility, autonomy, and inclusivity. Encourage open communication and collaboration regardless of location, and ensure that remote team members have equal access to resources, opportunities, and career development initiatives.
- Implement Flexible Work Policies: Offer flexible work arrangements that accommodate the diverse needs and preferences of employees. Set core hours and allow employees to choose their preferred work schedules based on their individual circumstances and job requirements.
- Facilitate Team-Building Activities: Organize regular team-building activities and social events that bring remote and in-person team members together. These activities can help foster relationships, build trust, and strengthen team cohesion. Offer both in person and on line social events as team members adjust to being back in person at different rates.
- Provide Training and Support: Offer training and support to help employees adapt to the challenges of hybrid work. Provide guidance on best practices for collaboration, time management, and communication, and offer resources to support employee well-being and mental health.
- Encourage Feedback and Adaptation: Encourage open and honest feedback from employees about their experiences with hybrid work. Use this feedback to identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments to policies, processes, and practices.
Navigating the return to the office and rebuilding teams in a hybrid work landscape is not without its challenges, but with careful planning, effective communication, and a commitment to inclusivity and collaboration, organizations can successfully overcome these challenges and create a thriving workplace where all employees feel valued, engaged, and supported, regardless of their work location.
