Unmasking the Doubter Within: Understanding Imposter Syndrome and Its Unexpected Link to Success
Written by Heather Miner
Ever feel like a fraud despite clear evidence of your skills and accomplishments? You’re not alone. This feeling, often referred to as Imposter Syndrome, is a psychological pattern in which individuals doubt their talents and fear being exposed as a fake. It’s more common than you might think, affecting people at all levels of experience—including high-achieving professionals in fields like IT consulting. As Jessica Stillman noted in a January 2024 Inc. magazine article, even successful figures like real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran view these feelings in an intriguing light.
So, what exactly is Imposter Syndrome? It’s marked by persistent self-doubt and the belief that success is due to luck or external factors rather than genuine ability. Someone with Imposter Syndrome might attribute a successful project to being in the right place at the right time or to charming a client, rather than to their own expertise and effort. This can create a cycle of anxiety, overworking to avoid
failure, and difficulty internalizing accomplishments. The term was first introduced by Dr. Pauline Clance and Dr. Suzanne Imes in their groundbreaking 1978 study on high-achieving women.
Who does Imposter Syndrome affect? The truth is, it can affect anyone. While it’s often associated with early-career professionals navigating new challenges and comparing themselves to more seasoned colleagues—such as those in programs like our own IngenioHQ and Dev Center—even experienced Senior Consultants are not immune. The pressure to continuously deliver high-quality solutions and keep pace in a fast-evolving industry can trigger self-doubt, regardless of tenure. Yet, as Corcoran shared with Inc., she sees a touch of Imposter Syndrome as a potential indicator of future success. Her reasoning? Those who constantly feel the need to prove themselves tend to be driven, hardworking, and hyper-aware of the value
they bring.
For early-career PMs, Data Analysts, Business Analysts, and Developers, Imposter Syndrome might manifest as hesitation to voice ideas, fear of asking “basic” questions, or minimizing their contributions to a successful outcome. Likewise, even seasoned Senior Consultants might quietly fear they can’t keep up with new technologies or that their past achievements were flukes. Still, if Corcoran’s perspective holds true, this internal pressure to rise above self-doubt could be a powerful engine for growth and success within our teams.
What does this mean for companies like Logisolve—and for our clients and their hiring managers? Understanding Imposter Syndrome is key to creating a supportive, growth-oriented environment. Recognizing that even high-potential hires and experienced team members may wrestle with these feelings—which, paradoxically, may reflect their ambition—can shape how you offer feedback, mentorship, and team structure.
Building a culture that celebrates learning, values effort alongside outcomes, and normalizes vulnerability can help mitigate the downsides of Imposter Syndrome while tapping into the drive it can inspire. By understanding and addressing this phenomenon—and even embracing its possible connection to ambition, as Corcoran suggests—we can build stronger, more confident, and ultimately more successful teams.
