When the AI Hype Fades: Building What Lasts
by Ben Youtz
Every investment in AI needs to be held up to the light: did it save time, improve accuracy, or grow something real? If you can’t point to a measurable impact on customers, on workers, on efficiency then it’s not transformation, it’s just theater.
Now, let’s talk about cleaning up what I like to call “AI slop code.” Over the last
few years, teams have rushed to bolt on models, scripts, and automations like duct tape on a leaky pipe. When the tide goes out, those shortcuts show. This is the moment to re-center on craftsmanship: refactor, document, test, and rebuild with purpose. Get your data pipelines in order, prune the half-baked experiments, and start holding AI work to the same standards as any other production system. It’s not glamorous, but it’s how you earn back trust in your AI investments.
Finally, don’t lose heart. The hype may fade, but the purpose can deepen. The goal isn’t to have “AI” in everything, it’s to use it where it genuinely lifts people up, where it creates clarity instead of confusion. The burst will leave behind the builders, the teachers, the folks who believe progress isn’t a sprint but a steady walk forward together. And that’s okay. Because when the music quiets, that’s when the real work starts and the ones who keep showing up will be the ones who make this next chapter worth reading.
