Why Interoperability and Prior Authorization Matter — And How Logisolve Can Help
By Melissa Brown
If you’ve worked in healthcare for any length of time, you know that interoperability and prior authorization (PA) have long been two of the most painful sticking points in the system. Patients struggle to access their own information, providers spend hours chasing records, and payers face constant scrutiny over administrative burdens.
Now, with the 21st Century Cures Act and the CMS Interoperability & Prior Authorization Rule, the industry is being forced to tackle these challenges head-on. Deadlines are approaching quickly, and what
once felt like “someday” is now right in front of us.
This isn’t just about checking a compliance box. It’s about reshaping how healthcare works. And it’s why I believe organizations that take this seriously, and act now, will be the ones leading the way in the years to come.
Why These Rules Exist
The intent is clear:
-
- Give patients control. People should be able to access their health records as easily as they check their bank accounts.
- Break down silos. When someone changes health plans or sees a new provider, their data should move with them.
- Support providers. Clinicians shouldn’t have to waste time chasing prior authorizations or paperwork.
- Streamline prior authorization. Decisions should be faster, transparent, and electronic, not a black box of delays.
For years, we’ve all said these things should happen. Now CMS has given the industry a timeline that makes it must happen.
What’s Coming — The Key Deadlines
Here’s what’s on the horizon:
-
- Already in effect (2021): Health plans must offer a Patient Access API.
- 2026: Prior authorization timelines shrink dramatically (72 hours for urgent, 7 days for standard). Plans must also begin publicly reporting their PA metrics.
- 2027: The biggest wave of change:
- Payer-to-Payer API (so data moves with patients).
- Provider Access API (so clinicians get data when they need it).
- Prior Authorization API (so requests and decisions flow electronically).
- Patient Access API enhancements (so patients see PA decisions in their own data).
Each of these isn’t just a rule. It’s a new expectation for how healthcare should work.
Why This Matters to You
Here’s the reality: compliance deadlines will arrive whether we’re ready or not. But meeting them isn’t the real win. The real win is using this moment to improve experiences for patients, providers, and payers.
-
- For patients: no more frustration asking, “Why can’t I see my own records?”
- For providers: fewer faxes, less phone time, more time with patients.
- For payers: less manual processing, better transparency, stronger relationships.
If we treat this as a chance to transform rather than just comply, the payoff is huge.
How Logisolve Can Help
This is where we come in. At Logisolve, we’ve been in the trenches with our healthcare technology partners and clients for years. We know how hard it is to make big change happen, but we also know how to get it right.
Here’s how we can help you navigate what’s ahead:
-
- FHIR / SMART on FHIR Expertise — We understand the technical standards at the core of CMS interoperability. We know how to build, test, and launch APIs that actually work in the real world.
- Integration & Workflow Redesign — Meeting the letter of the law is one thing. Embedding it into your systems and processes so it helps people is what we do best.
- Program Management — Multi-year mandates with multiple stakeholders are messy. We’ve led complex initiatives like this before, and we can keep you on track.
- Prior Authorization Transformation — Whether it’s automating PA, rolling out new platforms, or reducing the overall PA burden, we can help you move from “compliance project” to competitive advantage.
The Bottom Line
The CMS interoperability and prior authorization mandates aren’t going away. In fact, they’re about to reshape the industry in ways we’ve all been asking for. The organizations that act now will not only meet the deadlines but also set themselves apart as leaders in digital-first healthcare.
At Logisolve, we’re ready to help you do exactly that.
